Jose Valdes began working with borosilicate glass in Key West in 2015. What started as curiosity at the torch quickly became a full-time pursuit, built through experimentation, persistence and learning by doing. Much of his early development took place in public at Mallory Square’s Sunset Celebration, where he created glass live while displaying and selling his work.
In 2017, Valdes expanded his technical foundation through three intensive classes with renowned glass artist Robert Mickelsen, studying lattice work, flowers and insects, and goblet making. Those experiences broadened the techniques he could draw from while he continued developing a style of his own.
Today, Valdes continues to explore borosilicate glass without limiting the work to a single subject or style. Nature and the waters of the Florida Keys remain part of that vocabulary, alongside structure, pattern, color, movement and experimentation. The common thread is the process itself—seeing what can be created at the torch.
